Photo and description

The monument to the dead workers of Azovstal in the city of Mariupol was opened on October 25, 1967 in the Ordzhonikidze district on Leporsky street near the central checkpoints of the enterprise. With the start of the war, thousands of workers at the Azovstal plant went to the front, and more than a thousand people joined the militia regiment, where they underwent combat training before joining the Red Army.

Almost the entire plant's vehicle fleet was transferred to the army. By the efforts of the workers of the plant, two armored trains were assembled and formed, an auto repair shop was equipped with tools and personnel, and three pontoon bridges were built. The designers of the enterprise developed drawings for the manufacture of anti-aircraft fire installations from the warships of the Azov flotilla, and also were engaged in the conversion of merchant ships for military purposes. In parallel with this, the evacuation of specialists and equipment was actively carried out.

During the occupation of Mariupol, the Avzostal plant was taken over by the German "cannon king" Krupp. Thanks to the efforts of groups of patriotic underground fighters Shtank and Lyutikov, the fascists did not manage to establish metal production at Azovstal. During the occupation of the city, many people died, among whom were the workers of Azovstal. Out of 6,000 Azovstal residents who fought on the war fronts, hundreds were awarded medals and orders, and 8 became Heroes of the Soviet Union.

A monument to the dead Azovstal workers was erected in memory of those who could not live to see the celebration Victory. The monumental composition consists of three figures: a sailor, a soldier and a worker, behind which stands a stone block with the factory logo. The inscription on the monument reads: “The feat never dies. The people keep him in memory ”. On the pedestal there is a list of all the killed Azovstal residents. The authors of the sculptures are: architect Y. Lenkov and sculptor V. Batya.
