Photo and description
On the streets of Mariupol there are a huge number of monuments to cultural figures, and one of them is a monument to A.S. Pushkin. This is not the first monument to the great Russian poet in the city. The first monument was erected at the beginning of the last century. But he did not survive the difficulties of the Great Patriotic War, so the city authorities decided to erect a new monument. Later, in the park at the intersection of Torgovaya Street and Lenin Avenue, a bust was erected on a pedestal, but in the 80s, too. was dismantled. In June 2000, a new monument was inaugurated. A majestic full-length reinforced concrete sculpture is installed on the pedestal.
Such a stubborn desire of the inhabitants of Mariupol to have a monument to this particular poet is not unreasonable. After all, Mariupol became the only city in the Donetsk region, which was visited by Alexander Sergeevich Pushkin, driving to the Caucasus in the 20 of the 18th century. The city archives also contain documentary evidence of the fact that the 100th anniversary of his birth was solemnly celebrated in Mariupol. All this gives grounds to consider the monument to Pushkin not just a traditional monument to the great poet, but the embodiment of part of the real history of the city. Residents of Mariupol are very proud of this monument.
