Photo and description

The Citadel is a fortification located not far from the center of Lviv. It is located on a hill formed by three small mountains: Shembeka, Poznanskaya and Zhebratskaya. In terms of landscape geology, the Citadel can be interpreted as a flat-topped outlier on the Lviv plateau. In the middle of the 17th century, the city was bombarded from this place by the besieging Russian troops, and later by the troops of the Turks and their ally, the right-bank hetman Doroshenko. The fortifications of the Citadel were designed by the Austrian military after the suppression of the Polish rebellion in 1848. The approaches to the Citadel have been fortified by three trench systems at a distance of about one and a half kilometers from the center of the Citadel. At the end of the 19th century, nine auxiliary forts were built.

From 1912 to 1914, eleven more forts were erected: Gribovichi I and II, Dublyany, Sykhov, Zubra, Lisinichi, Sokolniki, Sknilov, Zyavlenskaya Gora, Ryasnoe. During world wars, fortifications were not used in hostilities. The barracks found their location here: first Austro-Hungarian, then Russian, Polish and, finally, Soviet troops. During the Great Patriotic War, a prisoner of war camp was located here. In order to strengthen the protection, the Germans built a system of small concrete pillboxes, which they placed in a circle on the mountain slopes. Almost two hundred and eighty thousand people passed through the dungeons of the Citadel concentration camp, half of whom died of hunger and disease. The preserved fortifications include a three-story barracks building and six towers. All the buildings of the Citadel are built of red brick.

And today the Citadel conquers with its power and strength, this building is imbued with a warlike spirit.
