The Citadel is a military fortification located on the banks of the Huong River. The total area of the complex is 520 hectares. The citadel is surrounded by walls, the length of which is about 10 kilometers.

The citadel was built from 1804 to 1832. At that time, the citadel actually guarded the city of Hue, which was within its walls. Initially, land was used to build the citadel, but in the first decade of the 19th century, thousands of people worked on the construction of ramparts, erected in the style of the engineer Vauban.

The rampart of the fortress is surrounded by a zigzag moat, reaching a depth of 4 meters and a width – 30 meters. One of the walls of the citadel, located on the side of the river, has a slightly rounded shape, repeating the bend of the river. The entrance to the citadel was carried out through the fortified fortress gates, two gates were also built to enter from the water.

The citadel complex was divided into three parts – Inner Citadel, Imperial Citadel, and the Forbidden Purple City.

One of the main gates of the citadel is the Ngomon Gate. The gate has five openings designed for different walks of life. The gate was crowned with a huge bas-relief Watchtower and five phoenixes at the top. It was here in 1945 that the last emperor of the Nguyen dynasty signed the abdication in favor of the Ho Chi Minh government.

Above the southern fortifications of the citadel rises the Kot Ko signal tower, also known as the Royal Knight. At the entrance to the citadel there is a pond over which a bridge is thrown, intended exclusively for emperors. Just behind the bridge you can see the Thai Hoa Palace. Previously, all important court ceremonies and official meetings were often organized in this palace. The columns of the palace supporting the roof were trimmed with gold. Behind this palace there are a couple of residences where mandarins were prepared for ceremonies. Wood carvings, skillful ornaments, rich interiors of castles. As well as the beautiful gardens and ponds, the Citadel is a real masterpiece of architectural art.
