Fort Carnal in Salerno is located on Via Torrione. It was built in 1563 as part of a defensive tower system designed to protect the city from raids by Saracen pirates, near the Irno River. According to historians, this name was given to the fort in memory of the bloody massacre with the participation of the Saracens, which took place in the year 872.

Initially, the fort was on the mainland, but later due to the construction of highway 18 was cut off. The presence of iron elements on the walls and the very location of the fort suggests that it was once a so-called "cavalry tower". The horsemen who lived inside were supposed to warn the population of Salerno in the event of an attack. In the 17th century, Ippolito di Pastena used the fort as his base during an uprising against Spanish rule. At the time of the Bourbons, a powder sweet was located here. And during the Second World War it was a firing point, traces of which can be seen today.

Nowadays Fort Carnal, which stands on the beautiful promenade of Salerno, is used for cultural events. It can be easily seen from Via Clemente Tafuri, named after the famous artist.
