Photo and description

The architectural ensemble of Round Square was formed in the 1760s-1780s. This is the only ensemble-monument of stone architecture of the 18th century in the city. It includes two semicircular buildings and two wings, built in the classicism style.

Originally, according to the project of the architect E. Nazarov, in 1775, 3 detached houses were built on each side of the square. According to the general plan of the city development, they were given a central place in the formation of the appearance of Petrozavodsk - from here the main streets were supposed to radiate out through the sections of the buildings. At first, the Olonets mining administration and its warehouses were located here.

In 1778-1779. the side buildings were connected to the central ones, thus forming two buildings. One of them became the governor's residence, the other was occupied by public places. In 1839, the provincial architect V. Tukhtarov changed some of the architectural structures of the buildings, and also connected them with the outbuildings with a blank stone fence.

In 1873, a monument to Peter the Great, the founder of the city, was erected in the center of the square. moved to the square in front of the local history museum. Now the monument is located on the embankment. In 1933, a monument to V. I. Lenin was erected in the center of the square, since 1960 the square bears his name.

Nowadays, the complex of buildings of the square houses the Karelian State Museum of Local Lore, the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Kazakhstan and its subordinate institutions.

A monument to G.R. Derzhavin, a Russian poet and the first governor of the Olonets province, is erected in the Governor's Park near the square.
