Kirov Square is the central and main square of the capital of Karelia - the city of Petrozavodsk. On the square there are architectural monuments of the 18-19 centuries and a small park. Kirov Square is the venue for most of the major events in the city.

The first structures that appeared on the square at the beginning of the 18th century were two churches made of wood: Svyatodukhovskaya and Peter and Paul. The latter, according to legend, was designed by Peter the Great. After the completion of the construction of the Alexandrovsky plant in 1777, two cathedrals were built on Kirov Square, one of them is the Svyatodukhovsky Cathedral, as well as two gymnasiums - for women and men.

At different times, Kirov Square had different names. In the 18th century. the square was named after the Fortress Square, in 1860 - Cathedral Square, in 1923 - Freedom Square, in the 30s - Labor Square, since 1944 - S.M. Kirov Square.

In 1956, a theater building was erected on the square according to the project of three architects: A. Maksimov, E. Chechma and S. Brodsky. The building was decorated and decorated with paintings under the direction of Academician S. Konenov. The theater functions to this day and the creative teams of the Musical Theater and the Theater of Russian Drama perform in it.

In 1965, the building that used to be the Triumph cinema was rebuilt into the National Theater. After a recent renovation, a Small Stage has been built in the building and several additional floors have been added over the wings of the building. There is also a puppet theater.

All buildings on Kirov Square are directly related to art: Karelian State Museum of Fine Arts, State House of Culture, Presentation and Exhibition Center of the Kizhi Museum-Reserve, the building of the Kantele folk song and dance ensemble.

Nowadays, Kirov Square often hosts holidays and concerts , festivals, as well as theatrical performances, exhibitions, fairs. To the west of Kirov Square there is a small park area; in the warm season, you can sunbathe on the beach located on the banks of the Lososinka River.
