Marafor square description and photos - Croatia: Porec. Detailed information about the attraction. Description, photographs and a map showing the nearest significant objects. The title in English is Marafor. Photo and descriptionMarafor Square is included in the obligatory excursion program, therefore, once in Porec, it is impossible not to visit this truly unique historical place. It is located at the end of the peninsula, on the territory of the old town (today this part is also the center of Porec). The name of the square - Marafor - presumably comes from the words "Mars" and "forum", that is, in fact, it is "Mars square". Indeed, the boundaries of the square form a square shape characteristic of ancient Roman squares. Once there was a temple of Mars, from which parts of stone columns and massive stone blocks remained. In addition, there was another pagan temple dedicated to Neptune. Both architectural landmarks date back to the 1st century AD. Not far from the square you can see the Euphrasian Basilica, the House of Two Saints, the Romanesque House, the Zucato Palace and other historical buildings. Interestingly, in the Roman era, the square was located much higher, as evidenced by fragments of an ancient pavement and an impressive number of houses , which were built here without any foundation - they are located directly on the sidewalk. One Roman admiral at his own expense restored a number of the oldest objects in Porec, and also began the construction of new ones. It is unknown whether he was originally from Porec or just fell in love with this amazing coastal town. One way or another, but a new milestone in the history of the city is associated with it. But not only sights attract tourists to Marafor Square. There are numerous cocktail bars and jazz clubs here. We also recommend reading State Memorial Museum of A. N.
