Phanagoria is a historical and ethnographic complex, which, in fact, is a Proto-Bulgarian village in Varna, in the Asparuhovo region. Work on the creation of a museum complex in Varna began in 2001, and by the time of its opening in 2002, only one stage of all planned works was completed.

This complex is a copy of the Proto-Bulgarian military camp of the 6th-8th centuries, which includes various military, fortification and economic structures: from wooden defensive walls with towers to working craft workshops.

All household items, weapons and costumes recreate the authentic setting of that era. On the territory of the museum complex, a square was also built with the yurts of the khan and the priest, a temple, a shooting gallery and a spectator tribune. All these structures can be attributed to approximately the 7th century.

At the second stage, it is planned to build a proto-Bulgarian fortress with a suspension bridge, as well as interior decoration typical of that era. In addition, a copy of the early Christian temple and various museum premises will also be built. Thus, the completed Phanagoria complex will occupy 4 hectares.

Guides work on the territory of the complex, lectures and various entertainment events are held with one goal - to show the history of these lands, to emphasize the importance and significance of the Pro-Bulgarian culture.
