Photo and description

Denmark is a magnificent country famous for its picturesque old castles. Colling is one of the many beautiful Danish royal castles. It is located in the central part of the Jutland peninsula, the city of Kollinge. The main purpose of the castle construction was to protect the country from foreign invaders.

Colling Castle was founded in 1268 by King Christopher I. Over time, the fortress was expanded, adding walls, towers, meeting rooms. The north side overlooking the lake was completed by Christopher III in 1441-1448. In the 16th century, the thick-walled fortress lost its defensive functions, for this reason Christian III built new buildings and towers in the southern part of the castle in the courtyard, transforming the fortress into a royal residence. In 1588, King Christian IV also contributed to the construction of Colling by completing the Giant Tower. It was decorated with four large statues - Hannibal, Hector, Scipio and Hercules. Only one statue of Hercules has survived to this day, the statue of Hannibal was destroyed in 1808 during a fire, the statue of Hector died in a storm in 1854, and the statue of Spicion fell to the ground and shattered.

Over time, the Colling residence became less and less used, as the center of political power was concentrated in Copenhagen. Later, Colling was no longer used for its intended purpose. The battles of the Napoleonic wars partially destroyed the castle.

It took a very long time to decide on the restoration of the ancient castle, in 1991 the restoration of the castle was completed. Today the castle serves as a city museum, it presents collections of furniture from the 16th century, paintings by Danish artists, old icons, ceramics and silverware, a collection of sculptures. Themed events are held for tourists.
