Photo and description

In addition to magnificent natural landscapes and picturesque landscapes, Irish Killarney National Park is famous for various historical and architectural sights, among which the Franciscan monastery - Macross Abbey, or rather - its ruins. The ancient monastery is located in the very center of the reserve, about ten minutes walk from the equally interesting Macross House and is available to visitors all year round and absolutely free of charge.

Macross Abbey was founded by monks of the Franciscan order in 1448 on the ruins of an older monastery , erected, as the legend says, by Saint Fionan in the 6th century. During its turbulent history, the monastery was repeatedly attacked and robbed, and the monks themselves were forced to leave the holy monastery several times. Finally, the monks left the abbey at the end of the 17th century.

Today the Macross Abbey is in a rather deplorable state, although the monastery walls staunchly resist time, and you can still see the church, the bell tower and the central courtyard surrounded by a vaulted arcade ... In the center of the courtyard grows a huge old yew tree, which, according to the Irish, is as old as the abbey itself.

Near the monastery walls, you will see an ancient cemetery, where the remains of some family members of the once influential local clans rest. Famous Irish poets such as O'Donahue, O'Sullivan and O'Reilly found their last refuge here. The cemetery of Macross Abbey is still active today,
