Photo and description

Tyrolean Landeck Castle is located on the ancient Roman road of Claudius Augustus, which connected Italian cities in the Po valley with territories in modern northern Germany. It was probably built in the first half of the 13th century on the inaccessible rocks above the Inn River by Count von Ulten. Subsequently, the fortress became the property of Count Meinhard II von Tyrol. In 1282, the Landeck District Court was already located here. The fortress flourished under the knights of von Schrofenstein in the 16th century.

In the first half of the last century, Landeck Castle was acquired by the magistrate of the city of the same name, who reconstructed it and adapted the premises of the Gothic fortress for the needs of the city museum. Today, Landeck Castle is a symbol of the city of Landeck, a popular recreation and cultural center, gathering all local residents and numerous tourists for temporary exhibitions. It houses a permanent exhibition dedicated to the history of the city and the life of the inhabitants of the castle. Here are collected household items, furniture, labor tools, carts and carriages, which were used by the owners and workers of the castle. There is an observation deck on the high castle tower, from where you can clearly see not only all the buildings of the fortress, but also the city of Landek below.

Landeck Castle originally consisted of a southern dungeon, a northern rectangular palace and a building that connected them. In the late 15th - early 16th centuries, the chapel of St. Stephen was erected in the western courtyard, where valuable medieval frescoes have survived to this day. Still later, several round corner towers appeared.
