Photo and description

Naudsberg Castle rises on a cliff above the village of Nauders in Tyrol. This imposing structure with impregnable fortress walls and many towers can be seen from afar. The castle for the princely judges was built at the beginning of the 14th century. It was first mentioned in documents from 1325. Until 1919, the castle was the seat of the district court.

The oldest part of the castle is the manor's palace and the square west tower. The semicircular arched gate on the South Wall was also made in the 14th century. Two round towers were built in the second half of the 15th century. The southern bastion with a tower appeared in the fortress in the second quarter of the 16th century. Hikers entered the castle grounds through the Zwingertor gate.

The palace under a gable roof consists of six floors. The upper floor was completed in the 16th century.

The first floor has wooden ceilings. The ceiling of the second, built in the Gothic period, was decorated with rich paintings in 1806-1809. On the second floor there is a former meeting room with a coffered ceiling from the late 15th century. The rest of the rooms in the castle have simple flat ceilings, created in the 16th-17th centuries.

On the second floor of the castle there is a domed chapel with a bell dating from 1465. The arched portal of the chapel was built in 1800.

The restoration and renovation of the interiors of Naudersberg Castle took place in 1960. Most of the fortress has been turned into a museum. In the building of the former palace, two apartments are also equipped, which are rented to tourists. There is also a restaurant where you can have a tasty and hearty lunch.
