The University of Evora was founded in 1559 by Cardinal Enrique, brother of King Joao III and Archbishop of Evora. Under the leadership of the Jesuit Order, the university reached its heyday by the beginning of the 18th century. In 1759, the Marquis of Pombal expelled the Jesuits from the country and the University was temporarily closed.

An elegant gallery has been preserved here, decorated with a panel of azulesush on edifying themes. In the assembly hall, which was once a baroque chapel, solemn ceremonies are held, diplomas are awarded. Old carved professorial chairs and student benches have been preserved.
