Schloss Viehofen description and photos - Austria: St. Polten. Detailed information about the attraction. Description, photographs and a map showing the nearest significant objects. The name in English is Schloss Viehofen. Photo and descriptionWiehofen Castle, located on a hill on the road to St. Polten, was first mentioned in documents dating from 1130, but historians believe that it was built much earlier than this date. Until 1898, the chapel of the castle served as a parish church for the inhabitants of the village of Wihofen, which is now part of the city of Sankt Polten. The castle belonged to different noble families, until in 1745 it was seized by the Kufstein gentlemen, who owned it until 2003. Until 1945, the castle was residential. Its premises were richly decorated and filled with luxurious furniture. Russian troops, who set up an ammunition depot in Vihoven Castle, ravaged this building. From the former splendor to the end of the war, not a trace remained. After 1945, the castle was forgotten by everyone and gradually collapsed. This continued until 2003, when Joseph Feegl bought this building for a pittance and began to renovate it. The reconstruction of the Vihoven castle continues to this day. They are restored slowly, thoughtfully and efficiently. Tourists who climb to the castle can enjoy not only the inspection of the unfinished building, but also the magnificent view of St. Polten that opens from its walls. Through an arched portal you can get into a large quadrangular courtyard, where a dilapidated Gothic chapel rises, which is also going to be restored. The three-storey palace is adjoined by a high round tower with a conical roof. Wiehofen castle has few visitors. I would like to believe that this situation will change when the palace is restored.
