Photo and description

The Wittelsbach palace complex (Residence) grew gradually in the XIV-XIX centuries. This monumental ensemble combines austere Gothic spirituality, baroque fantasy, the richness of the rococo style and the grace of neoclassical lines.

The palace has 112 rooms. Special attention should be paid to: the Antiquarium hall, made in the Renaissance style with a vaulted leaf; the Ancestor Gallery, decorated with 121 portraits of members of the Wittelsbach dynasty; court chapel and personal chapel of Maximilian I; halls of the Nibelungen with wall paintings of scenes from the German epic of the same name.

The Treasury of the Residence contains a magnificent collection of jewelry, crystal, ivory, enamel belonging to members of the Wittelsbach family, as well as symbols of royal power - the crown of the Bavarian kings and the sword of the Duke of Bavaria.

The Cuvillier Theater, built in the 18th century in the Rococo style, is considered a masterpiece of theatrical architecture. On January 29, 1781, the premiere of Mozart's opera Idomeneo took place here.
