Omsk Drama Theater is the oldest theater in the city and one of the best provincial Russian theaters. The theater was founded in 1874 with funds raised by the city society by subscription.

The theater building is a historical and architectural monument. It was built in 1905. The author of this project was the famous architect I. Khvorinov. At the beginning of the twentieth century. on the stage of the Omsk theater performances were staged based on the works of A. Ostrovsky, L. Tolstoy, A. Chekhov. From the creativity of M. Gorky were staged "Barbarians", "Children of the Sun", "At the bottom", "Summer residents" and "Bourgeoisie".

In the new theater, in addition to dramatic performances, operas were also staged - half of the troupe were soloists and a choir. A special place in the repertoire of the drama theater was given to performances based on Soviet drama, for example: A. Korneichuk "The death of the squadron", K. Trenev "Love Yarovaya", V. Vishnevsky "Optimistic tragedy" and V. Ivanov "Armored train 14-69". During the Great Patriotic War, the troupe of the evacuated Moscow Theater named after E. Vakhtangov performed on the stage of the theater.

1985 in the life of the Omsk theater was noted by Trostyanetsky's play "The War - Not a Woman's Face", written by S. Aleksievich. For this work, the State Prize of the RSFSR them. Stanislavsky was awarded to the director and famous actresses: Psareva E., Vasiliadi N., Nadezhdina N. and Barkovskaya K.

In 1983 the theater received the status of "academic". Omsk drama was twice awarded the State Prize of the Russian Federation named after I. K. Stanislavsky. For the first time in 1973 for N. Ankilov's play "The Soldier's Widow", and for the second time in 1985 for S. Aleksievich "The war is not a woman's face."

Since the 90s. The Omsk Drama Theater regularly tours across Russia and abroad, takes part in various Russian and international festivals, and tours.

In 2006, the theater team received the National Theater Award "Golden Mask" for the performances "Miss Julie" and "The Cherry Orchard" directed by Marcelli. The hallmark of the Omsk drama is the play "Summer Residents".
