State Russian Drama Theater. A.P. Chekhov is one of the most visited and popular theaters in the Republic of Moldova, located in the capital - the city of Chisinau.

The history of the creation of the famous theater goes back to 1934. It was at this time that the first Stationary Theater of Russian Drama was organized in Tiraspol, the head of which was a theater and talented artist - M.P. Teeth. Six years later, namely in 1940, the theater moved to Chisinau, in the building of the former theater "Express". The most striking performances of that time are considered the performances "Glory" by S. Gusev and "Field Marshal Kutuzov" by V. Solovyov.

During the Second World War, the theater repeatedly moved from one city to another. First it was Odessa (Ukraine), then Cherkessk (Cherkess Autonomous Region of the RSFSR). After the occupation of Cherkessk in 1942, the theater was transferred to the city of Mary, Turkmen SSR. During this period, the most significant performances of the troupe were such performances as “In the steppes of Ukraine” by A. Korneichuk, “Russian people” (based on the play by K. Simonov), “Natalka Poltavka” by I. Kotlyarevsky.

The theater returned to Chisinau in 1944 and immediately began touring Moldova, performances are shown in the central squares of cities and villages, on the back of agricultural vehicles instead of a stage. Among the outstanding leaders of that time, E.V. Hungarian, who made a significant contribution to the development of the theater. Under his leadership, performances based on the works of world and Russian classics - A. Pushkin, N. Gogol, A. Ostrovsky, L. Tolstoy, as well as J.-B. Moliere, W. Shakespeare, F. Schiller, J. London, B. Shaw and others. A special place belonged to the work of Anton Chekhov, after whose name the theater was named. During the period of activity on the stage of the theater, practically all the works (plays, stories) of Chekhov were staged.

Today the State Russian Drama Theater does not stop captivating the audience with new and new performances. They do not forget about the youngest spectators, constantly replenishing the repertoire with performances based on the works of Russian and foreign classics for children.
