Mozyr Drama Theater named after Ivan Melezh was founded on the basis of the Mozyr folk theater in 1990. It was a difficult time when old theatrical traditions were criticized and revised and new creative collectives were born. So it happened with the Mozyr folk theater. Young creative artists, together with graduates of city theater studios, created a new experimental theater "Verasen" (in Russian the name translates as "September") under the leadership of Mikhail Kolos.

The young creative team of the theater wanted to stage their own modern national drama ... Plays by G. Marchuk, Y. Kulik, A. Delendik, I. Sidoruk, F. Bulyakov, Y. Kupala, V. Volsky were staged at the theater. During the years of the newfound Belarusian independence, all theaters strove to stage plays by their national playwrights. Gradually, the theater staff began to mature and, in addition to the national drama, performances appeared on the stage based on classical works in a very interesting interpretation, which was proposed by the young collective of the experimental theater.

In 1994, it was decided to name the theater after the Belarusian writer Ivan Melezh. The theater, which had outgrown the time of amateur experiments and focused on high-quality classical drama, began to call itself dramatic.

With the arrival of the new artistic director Roman Tsyrkin in the theater, more humorous performances have appeared in the theater. The viewer, tired of the difficult realities of reality, wants to come to the theater to relax and laugh. Therefore, theatrical performances in the genre of "sitcoms" have gained such popularity lately. Such wonderful performances as "Masculine, Singular" by Jean-Jacques Bricker and Maurice Lasegue, "The Contract" by F. Weber were staged on the theater stage.
