State Order of the Red Banner of Labor Academic Theater. E. Vakhtangova is located in the very center of Moscow, on the Old Arbat, in an old Arbat mansion. It opened with the premiere of Maeterlinck's The Miracle of St. Anthony. The production was directed by E. Vakhtangov. The theater was then called "The Third Studio of the Moscow Art Theater".

The history of the theater began in 1913. Several enterprising students from various Moscow universities decided to create a “Student Drama Studio”. They were attracted by the training of actors according to the Stanislavsky system, which then became fashionable. Professionals did not agree to work with amateur students. After much persuasion, a student of Stanislavsky, Evgeny Vakhtangov, took on this.

Rehearsals of the play "The Lanins' Estate" based on the play by B. Zaitsev began. The premiere of the play, which took place in March 1914, failed. The Moscow Art Theater leadership categorically forbade Vakhtangov to work with non-professionals. But the ban did not work. The rehearsals were held in secret in an apartment on Mansurovsky Lane.

The studio was named “Moscow Drama Studio of E. B. Vakhtangov”. In September 1920, she was admitted to the Art Theater, under the name of the "Third Studio of the Moscow Art Theater". The first production of the theater is the play "The Miracle of St. Anthony". The premiere took place on November 13, 1921. The director of the play was Vakhtangov, and the artist was Zavadsky. Critics noted the success of the production. An article by critic L. Gurevich with a positive review of the performance was published in the Teatralnoe Obozreniye magazine for December 1921. Soon the theater received its building on the Arbat.

The young theater was looking for its own repertoire. Nikolai Erdman was invited to stage Carlo Gozzi's fairy tale "Princess Turandot". The performance was a resounding success. Vakhtangov was ill and could not see the premiere of the production.

In 1922, after the death of Vakhtangov, an artistic council was elected in the theater. Yuri Zavadsky became the director for a short time. Nemirovich-Danchenko decided to combine the second and third studios of the theater. The theater troupe did not agree. The actors defended their independence.

The main director E.R. Simonov. He had to leave his post during the years of perestroika. From 1987 to 2007, the theater was headed by one of the most famous theater actors - Mikhail Ulyanov. Today, the artistic director of the theater is Rimas Tuminas.

The theater's repertoire includes performances staged in different years. Recent productions: "Common Business" (R.
