Photo and description

The Gomel Regional Drama Theater began operating in 1939. A young creative team, the oldest of whom was no more than 30 years old, was created on the basis of the acting course of the People's Artist of the USSR Leonid Mironovich Leonidov (GITIS Moscow). The first performance was the Inspector for N.V. Gogol.

In 1940, it was decided to build a new theater building in Gomel, the project was drawn up by academician Ivan Zholtovsky, but the construction was prevented by the outbreak of war. The beginning of the war found the theater collective on tour in Bobruisk. During the Great Patriotic War, on the basis of the theater collective, "front-line theater brigades" were created, touring the fronts and hospitals and raising the morale of Soviet soldiers.

In 1954, a new theater building was built on the main square of Gomel under the leadership of the Leningrad architect Alexander Tarasenko, a student of Academician Ivan Zholtovsky. The auditorium of the theater is designed for 570 seats. The first performance, performed on the new stage, was symbolically called “The Years of Wanderings”. It was the end of the period of wandering for the theater team and returning to their hometown.

The famous International Festival of Theater Arts "Slavic Theater Meetings" is held in the theater building once every three years.

In 2004 -2005 the building was repaired and reconstructed. Outdated equipment was replaced with modern, more comfortable chairs were also installed.

Now the theater puts on performances based on Belarusian, Russian and foreign drama.
