The Chapel of Michael the Archangel in the heart of the Russian settlement of Bakhchisarai is another monument to the glorious heroes of the Crimean War.

At this time, Bakhchisaray experienced all the difficulties of the rear city, being in close proximity to the center of hostilities. It was here that the wounded arrived in an endless stream. They were housed in the cells of the Assumption Monastery and in the Khan Palace. The soldiers who died from their wounds in the hospital were buried in the necropolis of the Assumption Monastery and in the old Armenian district of the city of Ermeni-Maale. A fraternal cemetery was set up near the old Armenian cemetery, and about 4 thousand Russian soldiers were buried here. Since that time, this area of the city has been called the Russian settlement.

Over time, the cemetery fell into disrepair. By the 40th anniversary of the Crimean War, it was decided “to adequately perpetuate the burial place of the defenders of Sevastopol and to erect a monument-chapel over the common grave. With the active participation of the provincial and city leadership, a special construction committee was organized to build the chapel. Funds for the construction were collected by subscription. Donors for the construction included nobles, military leaders, local officials, clergy and common people. Besides money, church utensils were also donated. The city of Sevastopol donated the icon of the Archangel Michael, in whose honor the chapel was consecrated, and the icon of St. Prince Alexander Nevsky. The project of the monument was developed by M. Praga, an engineer from Simferopol.

The grand opening of the chapel monument took place on June 15, 1895. Externally, the monument resembles the architecture of St. Nicholas Church at the Bratsk Cemetery of Sevastopol. Above the entrance is the "Sevastopol Sign" with the number 349 in a laurel wreath, which has become an unofficial award for the defenders of the city of Sevastopol. Despite its small size, the chapel, located on a hill, dominates the surrounding landscape among the rocky cliffs of the gorge.

At the beginning of the 20th Art. the crypt was desecrated and the property of the chapel was plundered. In 1990, the remains of soldiers were found under the rubble. They were transferred for storage to the St. Nicholas Orthodox Church of Bakhchisarai.
