Photo and description

The Rijksmuseum is a national art museum in Amsterdam that displays works of art by both Dutch and foreign artists, as well as historical collections.

Rijksmuseum was founded in The Hague in 1800. The then government of the country decided that the state needed its own museum, modeled on the Louvre. In 1808 the museum was transferred to Amsterdam. Initially, it was located in the Royal Palace, then in the Royal Academy of Arts and Sciences, and only in 1885 a separate building was built for it. The author of the architectural project is the famous architect Peter Kuipers. He is also the author of the building of the Central Railway Station in Amsterdam, which is very similar in appearance to the State Museum.

In 1906, the building was specially rebuilt to display the famous painting by Rembrandt "Night Watch". At the beginning of the 21st century, the building was closed for several years for reconstruction. Now it fully meets all modern requirements, both from the point of view of the safety of exhibits and from the point of view of the convenience of visitors.

The main place in the museum's exposition is given to a collection of paintings. Here is a rich collection of paintings from the golden age of Dutch painting. The central place in the museum is given to Rembrandt's masterpiece "Night Watch". Besides him, the museum exhibits many other works by Rembrandt. Also, the Dutch school is represented by such names as Vermeer and Hals, as well as de Hoch, Steen, Ruisdal, van der Gelst, van Korel and others.

The museum houses the richest collection of decorative and applied art, which includes samples of furniture, dishes, clothes, weapons and much more. The Asian pavilion displays the art of Asian countries.
