Photo and description

The Assumption Cathedral is the main Orthodox church in Helsinki and the largest Orthodox church in northern Europe. In 1998 the cathedral celebrated its 130th anniversary. Made of red brick, the Assumption Cathedral was built on Katajanokka Island in 1868. The cathedral was designed by the Russian architect, academician A.M. Gornostaev; its construction lasted 11 years. The architectural solutions of the cathedral go back to the architecture of Russian wooden churches of the 14th century; the cathedral also resembles a white-stone church built in the 16th century in Kolomenskoye, near Moscow. The solemn consecration of the church dedicated to the Dormition of the Theotokos took place in the presence of the St. Petersburg nobility on October 23, 1868. The temple was consecrated by priest Nikolai Popov.
