September 7 (August 26, old style), 1812, a 12-hour battle took place near the village of Borodino, during which the French managed to capture the positions of the Russian army in the center and on the left wing. The battle ended with the withdrawal of the French army after the cessation of hostilities to their original positions. The Russian army retreated, but retained its combat capability and soon expelled Napoleon from Russia. The Battle of Borodino is one of the bloodiest battles of the 19th century.

The main exposition of the Borodino Field Museum-Reserve, created for the 190th anniversary of the Battle of Borodino, is located in a building near the Rayevsky battery. The basis of the exposition is genuine items related to the battle - uniforms and weapons of soldiers of both armies, banners, standards and awards, personal belongings of participants in the battle, documents and maps, finds from the battlefield - cannonballs, grenade fragments, buckshot and lead bullets. It includes works of fine art created both by participants and contemporaries of the events of the Patriotic War of 1812, and by artists of the 19th and 20th centuries. The full picture of the general battle on August 26 is presented to the visitors thanks to the display in one large hall of the relics of the heroes of the battle, four pictorial sketches by F.A.Rubo for the Borodino panorama, the diorama “Battle for Bagration's Flushes”, and a model of the battlefield.

Opposite the hill where Rayevsky's battery was once located, a monument is erected in honor of the three branches of the army that defended this fortification. At the base of the monument lies the remains of the commander P.I.Bagration.
