Photo and description

The small town of Bad Sauerbrunn is located in the very east of Austria, just 15 kilometers from the Hungarian border. It is home to just over two thousand people. The city is famous for its healing mineral springs.

The first Celtic settlements appeared here in ancient times, and a little later, ancient Roman baths (thermae) were built here. However, a full-fledged resort was founded only in the middle of the 19th century, in 1847. Local healing springs are especially rich in magnesium. By the way, the Sauerbrunn coat of arms depicts a gushing fountain symbolizing the drinking springs of healing water scattered throughout the town.

Interestingly, Bad Sauerbrunn was considered Hungarian territory for a long time, and only in 1920 became a part of Austria. Curious, that for some time - from 1921 to 1925 - it served as the administrative center of the newly founded federal state of Burgenland.

Unfortunately, the city suffered greatly from the Nazi troops after the Anschluss of Austria by Nazi Germany. Almost all health centers and spa parks were destroyed. However, after the Second World War, careful restoration work was carried out here, and already in 1987 the city was completely restored as an important spa center.

Among the city's attractions, it is necessary to note the spa park with a rose garden, where more than 2,000 different types of these flowers grow, many promenades, music pavilions and exquisite villas built at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries and which survived the Second World War. The Catholic Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was built in 1970, while it contains an old painting from the late 18th century depicting the Madonna and Child. Also, at a distance of about a kilometer from the main railway station, there is an old Jewish cemetery.
