Photo and description

The Fratte Archaeological Site is one of the main tourist attractions in the resort town of Salerno on the Amalfi Riviera. A unique complex of its kind is located on the northeastern outskirts of Salerno, on a low hill on the left bank of the Irno River - once the center of an ancient settlement was located here. The oldest artifacts found here date back to the Bronze Age, and a permanent settlement only emerged in the 6th century BC. with the advent of the Etruscan tribes. The place was not chosen by chance - it offers a good view of the fertile Irno Valley and the road connecting Capua and Pontecanano, two important Etruscan centers. Probably, people from these two cities were the first inhabitants of Fratte. In the 4th century BC. Fratte was conquered by the Samnite tribes, and at the end of the 2nd century BC. destroyed during the war between Ancient Rome and Carthage. By the way, modern scientists began to call this settlement by the name of Fratte, and its real name from the times of the Etruscans and Romans is still unknown.

The first finds in the Fratte area were made at the beginning of the 19th century - they were artifacts from the 6th century BC. - 2nd century AD, discovered during the construction of the road. In 1900, systematic archaeological excavations began - then over 200 graves from the 4th-5th centuries BC were found. And during the last excavations, another 150 graves were discovered.

Today, on the territory of the ancient city of Fratte, you can see the Acropolis, fragments of street pavements, ruins of houses, the ruins of an Etruscan temple, a vast Roman thermal complex and large water tanks of unusual shape. The only part of the complex dating from the period of Samnite domination (4th-3rd century BC), is a necropolis of eight graves located on the eastern side of the hill. Many of the artifacts found in Fratte are on display today in the Provincial Archaeological Museum of Salerno.
