Church of San Francesco a Ripa in Italy, Rome resort
Rating: 7,5/10 (100 votes)  The Church of San Francesco a Ripa is a titular church in Rome, located in the Trastevere area. According to legend, in 1219 in St. Francis of Assisi lived in this church during his stay in Rome. Today, a crucifix and a stone pillow of the saint are kept in the church cell. The construction of the three-nave basilica was started by Rodolfo Anguillara – follower of St. Francis, in 1231. The portrait of the founder can be seen on his tombstone. The church is decorated with frescoes by Pietro Cavallini. In 1682-1689, the church was completely rebuilt by Mattia de Rossi. During the construction work, the temple was decorated with sculptures of the XVII – XVIII centuries. Unfortunately, no frescoes by Cavallini have survived to this day. The sculpture Ecstasy of Blessed Ludovica Albertoni, executed in 1674 by Bernini, deserves special attention. You can see the sculpture in the Paluzzi-Albertoni Chapel.
