Photo and description

The Roman Catholic Church of the Archangel Michael, located on the most famous street in Linz called Landstrasse, is often called Ursulinskaya. It was built in 1736-1772 near the Ursuline monastery (Ursulinenhof), which was abandoned by the Ursuline sisters in 1968. Currently, the holy monastery belongs to the state and has been completely rebuilt for the needs of the cultural center. The Church of the Archangel Michael remains active, although its space is often used for various exhibitions and concerts of religious music.

The late Baroque church with two towers, designed by the architect Johann Haslinger, was consecrated in 1757. Several sculptures installed in niches on the facade belong to the chisel of the talented master Franz Joseph Mal, and the large sculptural composition depicting the Virgin Mary and the angels, located on the roof between the two towers, was made by Ignaz Hebel.

The interior will be of interest to numerous metal decorations and marble altars. The main high altar was completed in 1741 by Johann Matthias Krinner. Another altarpiece by Martino Altomonte, who also worked on the decoration of the temple, is famous for its sculptures. The central place on it is occupied by a statue depicting the patron saint of the church, the Archangel Michael. Nearby are the images of the archangels Gabriel and Raphael. The carved baroque pulpit was made in 1740. It is decorated with drawings on biblical themes and images of putti angels, which point to the four continents known at that time - Europe, Asia, America and Africa. The organ in the temple was installed in 1876 and restored in 2006.
