Kazan State Academic Russian Bolshoi Drama Theater named after VI Kachalova is located in the very center of the city. Its building is located on the Bauman pedestrian street. It is one of the oldest theaters. The theater was founded in 1791 by the will of the Kazan governor.

Governor Prince Baratayev became the founder of a public theater in Kazan, which was at that time on the street. Voskresenskaya. The performance space was rented. The troupe included semi-amateur artists. In 1802, a building was built specially for the serf theater by the landowner Esipov. A troupe of serfs and several free artists performed in it. In 1805, the theater troupe was headed by the famous playwright and artist Melters. It was he who laid the cultural foundations of the Kazan Drama Theater.

In 1849 - 1852. a stone theater building was built at the expense of the city budget. In terms of technical equipment, the theater building was not inferior to the best theaters in Russia.

At different times, famous directors and actors worked on the theater stage: Schepkin, Miloslavsky, Mochalov, Zhivokini, Martynov. Leo Tolstoy, who was studying at the university at that time, attended the performances. In terms of artistic level, the theater was not inferior to the Moscow and St. Petersburg Imperial Theaters. In 1919, a fire destroyed the building of the old city theater.

The current building of the drama theater was built in 1833 by order of the merchant Sinyakov. In 1914, the residential building was converted into a theater during the reconstruction process. An auditorium and a stage for staging performances were made in the building. Dramas and operettas were performed on the stage of the theater. Films were shown. The hall is designed for 500 spectators.

Since 1948, the theater has been named after the People's Artist of the USSR V. I. Kachalov, who began his career in the theater in this theater.
