An ancient fortress, built by the Byzantines in the XIV century, dominates the city. Several of its fragments have survived - triangular bastions and the central tower. In the 30s of the 17th century, the fortress was rebuilt by the French architect Antoine de Ville. Now it houses the Provincial Museum of Istria.
