Photo and descriptionSnake Island is a natural landmark in Bulgaria, located in the resort of Duni. The island is located in the sea, 15 kilometers south of Sozopol, north of the mouth of the Ropotamo River. Its area is about 0.3 hectares. The official name of the island is St. Tom's Island. However, he was popularly nicknamed the Serpent due to the fact that these places are the habitat of several species of snakes. In addition to them, you can see Gunther's voles, mouse-like rodents and other representatives of the animal world on the island. In the 20s of the last century, botanist Buresh came here, who planned to create his own collection of cacti. The soil of Snake Island was found to be suitable for this type of plant. Cacti, once brought by a botanist from the Botanical Garden of Bratislava, successfully took root in these places - today they occupy almost half of the island's area. The most picturesque season begins in June, when numerous wild cacti begin to bloom in large yellow flowers. Ripe plum-sized fruits are edible and smell like strawberries. Due to the interesting flora in 1962, the Serpent Island was officially granted the status of a nature reserve. On the island there is a small dilapidated church of the Middle Ages, which is a cultural monument. Thanks to the existing legends about the treasures buried on the Snake Island, many treasure hunters come here every year.
