The Melville Lighthouse description and photos - Philippines: Palawan Island. Detailed information about the attraction. Description, photographs and a map showing the nearest significant objects. The title in English is The Melville Lighthouse. Photo and descriptionMelville Lighthouse is located on the deserted southern coast of Balabak Island, part of the Palawan province. It's not easy to get there, but the trip is worth it. The lighthouse offers a wonderful view of the mountainous island that belongs to the Philippines lying in the distance. They say that in good weather you can even see the outline of the island of Borneo from here. The lighthouse has a caretaker who maintains it in good condition and protects it from vandals. The builders of the lighthouse were the Spaniards in the 19th century, and in 1898 it came into the possession of the Americans. For over a hundred years, the lighthouse has served as a guiding light for passing ships. Today, this amazingly beautiful building, which appears to be lined with coral, has become a tourist attraction. Another solar-powered lighthouse was built a couple of hundred meters away. The road to the lighthouse can take several hours, or even a couple of days: first you need to get to the town of Tio Tuba at the southernmost tip of Palawan, then take a ferry to Balabak Island. The ferry usually departs around lunchtime and arrives in Balabak for dinner before it gets dark. The next day, you will have to take a boat to go to the southern coast of the island - the journey takes about two hours. The inhabitants of the island are proud of the lighthouse and consider it their main tourist attraction. The Balabak island itself is famous for its beautiful coastline with many secluded coves and sandy beaches, where you can relax after traveling to the lighthouse. There are rare species of animals on the island, for example, the Asian deer, as well as incredibly beautiful birds, striking with their colorful plumage. The culture of the indigenous inhabitants of these places - the Molbogs tribe - may also be of interest to tourists.
