Bishop's Palace and Seminary (Palazzo Vescovile e Seminario Vescovile) description and photos - Italy: Cefalu (Sicily). Detailed information about the attraction. Description, photographs and a map showing the nearest significant objects. The name in English is Palazzo Vescovile e Seminario Vescovile. Photo and descriptionThe Bishop's Palace and Seminary are ancient buildings located in Cefalu. The first is the seat of the local bishop. Its construction was initiated by Bishop Francesco Gonzaga at the end of the 16th century, and the final completion of the work took place only under the rule of Bishop Francesco Vanni at the end of the 18th century. The latter gave the Palazzo Vescovile the shape of an aristocratic palace in accordance with the taste and style of the era. The coat of arms of Francesco Vanni with the date "1793" stands out above the main entrance. The courtyard opens onto three internal palace facades with balconies and eaves of volcanic tuff, decorated with arched tympanes. The side on which the entrance door is located faces a low building with a flat roof. The recent addition of one floor has made the overall appearance of the whole complex somewhat heavier. The building of the Episcopal Seminary is adjacent to the Bishop's Palace. It was built here at the end of the 16th century by the same bishop Francesco Gonzaga. The facade of the seminary is divided into three sectors of unequal width. The right sector, the largest, is in turn divided by wide pilasters with convex consoles. In the middle, at the level of the second floor, there is a balcony with a cornice made of volcanic tuff, and below it there is a portal and two windows devoid of decorations. The other two sectors are also decorated with pilasters, but narrower, and articulated balconies with tympanes and pronounced cornices. The last floor is notable for a tiny loggia with a protruding cornice.
