The ancient Roman five-arch bridge of Tiberius, spanning the Marecchia River, was built in 14-21 AD, i.e. construction began under the emperor Augustus, and was completed under the emperor Tiberius. The bridge stood for more than half a thousand years and in 580 was badly damaged by the Goths. Only in 1680, under Pope Innocent XI, the bridge was restored in its present form.
