His Serene Highness Prince Vorontsov gave his wife Elizabeth a ladder, which cost him 800 thousand rubles. The author of the project was the architect F. Boffo, who carefully worked out the proportions of the structure, pleasing the eye with several optical effects.

The staircase was originally wooden, then 200 steps were laid out of Trieste sandstone. Almost 100 years later, it was replaced by granite, and the sites were asphalted. Nowadays there are 192 steps and 10 platforms on the stairs. From any point of the staircase you can observe the ensemble of Primorsky Boulevard.

In Soviet times, the staircase was renamed in memory of the uprising on the battleship Potemkin in 1905, and before the revolution it was called Richelievskaya. at its beginning there is a monument to the Duke (Duke) De Richelieu, the first governor-general of the city of Odessa and the Novorossiysk Territory.
