Gunung-Leser National Park covers an area of 7927 sq. km. The park is located in the northern part of Sumatra, on the borders of two Indonesian provinces: North Sumatra and Aceh.

The park is located on a jungle-covered mountain range called Bukit Barisan. The length of this mountain range is 1700 km, consists of volcanoes, some of which - about 35 - are active. In addition to the Gunung Leser National Park, there are two other national parks on the ridge. All three of these parks are also known as the Virgin Rainforests of Sumatra, and because of their unique biodiversity, these parks were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2004.

Gunung Leser National Park is named after Mount Leser, which is 3119 m high. The length of the park is about 150 km, and the width of this reserve is about 100 km, 40% of the park's territory is mountains. The park has a nature reserve for Sumatran orangutans, Bukit Lawang. This reserve, founded in 1973, is home to about 5,000 animals. In 1971, a research station was even created on the territory of the park to study these animals. In addition to orangutans, the park is home to the Sumatran elephant (endemic to the island of Sumatra), the Sumatran tiger (a rare subspecies of the tiger, also endemic to the island of Sumatra, listed in the Red Book), the Sumatran rhino (the smallest representative of the rhinoceros family), Siamang (from the species of primates), Indian sambar, Bengal (dwarf) cat, Sumatran serau.
