Photo and description

Ufagen House is one of the most important monuments in Gdansk. It is the only bourgeois residence in Poland that is open to visitors.

The merchant Johan Ufagen bought this building in 1775, after which modernization began immediately, which lasted 12 years. The construction work was supervised by the architect Johann Benjamin Dreyer. Ufagen lived in his house until his death, after which in 1802 the building went to the heirs. Interestingly, the dying owner forbade the heirs to change the interior decoration of the house.

The building was turned into a museum in 1910, the layout of the house and interior decoration remained unchanged. In 1944, all furniture and exhibits were evacuated, and the building itself was completely destroyed, like the city itself. In the 50s, the building was rebuilt according to old plans and photographs; the museum itself was opened only in 1998.

Today, in the Ufagen house, you can see the unique atmosphere of a bourgeois house of the 18th century. Among the exhibits are a canopy with molded decorations, a tea room with an 18th century stove, which was created in a Gdansk factory. On the second floor, there is perhaps the most beautiful room in the house - a salon where important guests were once received. In the kitchen and dining room, you can see the preserved kitchen utensils, as well as some of the furnishings of those times.
