Photo and description

In the Old Suburb area of Gdansk, there are several architectural monuments worthy of the attention of travelers. Such interesting objects include the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, located on Zhabi Kruk street. This Gothic church is impressive in size and is considered one of the most grandiose churches in the city, built in the 15th century. In 1436, the priests of this church founded a parish school, which operated until the 20th century. Teaching at school and conducting divine services was carried out by intelligent and educated holy fathers, who collected rare and valuable books, developed the principles of pedagogy, and distinguished themselves in the diplomatic field. Many of them were friends with famous scientists and people of art.

In the middle of the 15th century, the church of Saints Peter and Paul received the status of a parish church.

During the Second World War, a fire broke out in the building of the church, which almost completely destroyed the historic interior. They began to restore it, but the reconstruction work continues to this day. By some miracle, the Ufagen Chapel survived, which is decorated in the Rococo style. There are preserved the gravestone of the Ufagenes, decorated with an ornate epitaph, and some other slabs that served as monuments to wealthy citizens.

It was possible to save from fire and lamps dating from the 17th century.

The craftsmen are still working over the restoration of the central altar, which was executed in a baroque manner. Such a long and painstaking work is due to the fact that the altar is assembled from genuine antique parts.
