Photo and description

The Church of Santa Prisca is today one of the most striking sights - an example of the Baroque style of Mexico in the mid-eighteenth century. It is located in the protected town of Taxco, Guerrero State, in a central square. Its construction on the main city square was started in 1751 and completed seven years later. The church was originally built as a place of ministry for the priest Manuel de la Borda. The construction was carried out under the direction of two architects - French Diego Duran and Spanish Cayetano.

The temple, built of pink stone, has two graceful, richly decorated towers, no less magnificent facade that looks to the west. The temple has nine wooden altars covered with gold leaf. There is the altar of the Immaculate Conception, the altar of the Virgin Mary of Guadalupe and Our Lady of the Rosary. Inside, all the walls are decorated with magnificent paintings.

Santa Prisca in the history of Mexico is a symbol of the era of dawn and enrichment, which is directly associated with the beginning of silver mining in the mountains in Taxco County. The church was built with money from the silver tycoon Jose de la Borda. The rich interior and sophisticated architecture required a lot of money, and after seven years one of the richest people in New Spain went bankrupt.

There are many shops selling silver goods near the church.
