Linz Castle is a medieval castle located in the Austrian Linz on the banks of the Danube. The castle was built on the site of the former Roman Fort Lentia. The first mention of the castle dates back to 799. In 1477 the castle was rebuilt, and from 1489 to 1493 it functioned as the residence of Emperor Frederick III. During this period, the coat of arms of the castle appeared.

In 1600, Emperor Rudolph II hired the Dutch architect Anton Muis to renovate and partially rebuild the castle. In 1604, the main gate of the castle was built, named after its new owner - Rudolfstor.

In 1800, a terrible fire broke out in the castle, completely destroying the southern wing. After some time, a hospital was opened in the castle, and in 1811 it was converted into a provincial prison. However, Already in 1851, barracks for soldiers were made in the castle, which existed until the end of World War II.

Since 1953, a ten-year reconstruction of the castle began, after which the Upper Austrian State Museum was opened in it. The permanent exhibition of the museum includes a collection of historical weapons, musical instruments, a collection of ancient coins. In addition, themed temporary exhibitions and a number of outdoor events are held.

In 2006, an architectural competition was held to build a new southern wing of the castle, which burned down in 1800. It is planned to house one of the museum's expositions in the new wing.
