Photo and description

Marmaris is located on the site of the ancient city of Fiskos. On its territory, as in many cities of Turkey, the old city has remained practically intact. This city was ruled by representatives of many civilizations: Carians, Minoans, Rhodesians, Assyrians, Egyptians, Ionians, Dorians, Macedonians, Syrians, Persians, Romans and Byzantines, Seljuks and Ottomans. In Fiskos you can find traces of all these great peoples. Today the city occupies only the top of a hill in the northern part of Marmaris. This place is known as the archaeological center of Ashartepe.

An ancient acropolis is located here, approximately two kilometers north of the present bay. Until now, archaeological excavations are being conducted on its territory, the finds of which reveal more and more new monuments of that time to the world. Nowadays, here you can look at the ruins of the old walls, from which little has survived. There is an opinion that the inhabitants of Fiskos were forced to destroy the city instead of giving it to Alexander the Great. But the main attraction of Ashartepe can be safely called the remains of an ancient fortress, founded by the Greeks three thousand years BC.

After the decline of Fiskos in the second century BC, the foundations of Ashartepe buildings and stone slabs were dismantled for the construction of new structures in other places or used as ballast for ships.

A lot has happened in these places since that time: the city was conquered, destroyed, rebuilt many times, but the remains of the fortress give us information about past events. Today there is a museum where you can get acquainted with the traditional dwelling of the Turks, visit an exhibition of paintings, as well as view amphorae of antiquity. In addition, there is a beautiful courtyard, the so-called living part of the museum, where beautiful peacocks walk in the magnificent garden.
