The museum is located in the very center of Odessa, next to the old City Garden, in a building that is now an architectural monument of the second half of the 19th century.

Odessa State Historical and Local Lore the museum was formed on the basis of the Museum of Defense of Odessa and the Odessa Regional Museum of Local Lore. Documents, printed publications, objects of applied and fine arts, numismatic collections, weapons of the 17th - 19th centuries, associated with the history of the city and the region and once included in the collections of the Museum of the Odessa Society of History and Antiquities, the Museum of Books, the Museum of Old Odessa and some others, turned out to be an integral part of his funds.
