Photo and description

The amethyst mine near Luosto is the only mine in Europe open to tourists. It is located at the top of Lampivaara Mountain, which can be reached by funicular. Amethyst, a type of quartz, is considered to be the “Lapland stone”, jewelry of which is very popular among locals.

The cramped mine is mined by hand using ordinary tools, thus turning it into a kind of museum where you can take part in this fun process. To do this, for a certain fee, you must become a shareholder in the mine and receive the right to mine these crystals with your own hands once a year.

There is a grinding workshop at the mine for their processing, where amethysts are sorted and selected. Gems are sent to Luosto for jewelry making, which can be purchased from local stores.

This gem of different purple shades, according to ancient belief, has healing and magical properties. Therefore, by taking a tour of the mine, you can get your hands on a lucky talisman.
