Berdyansk lighthouse is one of the oldest lighthouses in Ukraine, it began to function back in 1838. The lighthouse was built almost at the very end of the Berdyansk Spit from a specially brought stone for this.

It is noteworthy that over the entire period of its existence, the appearance of the lighthouse has practically not changed. Like many centuries ago, the lighthouse looks like a white octahedral tower twenty three meters high with an orange stripe in the middle. Only its technical equipment was changed. In 1889, a special steam horn was installed at the lighthouse, which gave sound signals during heavy fog. In 1922 the first telephone line was installed to the lighthouse. And today the lighthouse is equipped with a modern electric beacon and a radio beacon installed at a height of 70 meters. It is turned on if necessary.

The sea slowly approaches the lighthouse, hitting its walls with storms. But our ancestors knew a lot about construction and the lighthouse has been bravely resisting the onslaught of water and wind for more than one century. Its light is visible for many kilometers in the sea.

The first lighthouse was built exactly on the Berdyansk Spit, however, due to the fact that the ships after bypassing the spit had to move to the Berdyansk port practically without reference, in 1877 it was it was decided to build another lighthouse, which was named the upper one. And the old lighthouse was named, respectively - the lower one. Then, kerosene lamps were used as a light source, they were lit every evening by the caretakers who lived directly on the territory of the lighthouse. The Berdyansk lighthouse is still operating today, showing the way to the ships, and near the entrance there is an inscription: "Lighthouses are the shrine of the seas, they belong to everyone and are inviolable, like the plenipotentiaries of powers."

If you are a romantic at heart, you should definitely visit the lighthouse at sunset, when against the background of an orange-red sky, with the appearance of the first stars the lighthouse begins its work, illuminating the way for ships.
