Photo and description

Doctor's Garden is a small park in the very center of Sofia. It got its name thanks to the "Doctor's Monument" - a monument dedicated to medical workers who were forced to sacrifice their lives in the Russian-Turkish war to save people.

The monument itself is the central figure of the Doctor's Garden. The monument was erected in 1882-1884 by the Italian Luigi Farabosco, the author of the project was the architect A.I. Tomishko. The monument was created from granite and sandstone, mined in the village of Tashkesen, it is a pyramid with four faces of stone blocks with the names of 531 doctors carved on each. The base of the pyramid is a quadrangular platform with a plinth decorated with bronze wreaths. On four sides of the monument there are inscriptions with places, where the death toll of Russian doctors reached the highest level: Plevna, Shipka, Mechka and Plovdiv.

Every year on March 3, the Bulgarian Red Cross Society solemnly honors the memory of the dead doctors, and the Russian Embassy Church serves as a requiem.

In addition to the monument, a lapidarium has been created in the Doctor's Garden - very small in size, but very interesting in view of the exhibits presented. All sorts of parts and ruins of ancient buildings found in the Balkans are exhibited here. Among them are elements of the decoration of the Temple of Zeus of the II century, which archaeologists found during excavations under the Garibaldi Square right in the center of the capital.
