Photo & Description

Alice Springs is the home base of the famous Royal Flying Doctor Service, which provides medical services to people living in remote areas of Central Australia. You can get acquainted with the work of the service during an exciting tour, which includes a story about "flying doctors", watching videos and visiting a small museum. A lovely garden and a small gift shop have been built around the service headquarters.

The Royal Flying Doctor Service was established in 1928 by the Reverend John Flynn as an experiment called the Aviation Medical Service. His idea was to ensure the safety of the inhabitants of remote communities in the interior of the continent by creating hospitals. In the first year of operation, the service made 50 flights, having flown about 20 thousand miles. In 1939, the first "flying doctors" flights, providing both emergency medical care and therapeutic services throughout Central Australia, took off from Alice Springs. Until the 1960s, the service rented aircraft, hired pilots and service personnel under contract. But later, with the help of the government, she began to acquire everything she needed as property. Using the latest advances in aviation, communications and medical technology, the service has been able to create a network of healthcare facilities for those who live, work or travel across the vast Australian Outback.

Today the service has bases in Adelaide, Port Agusta and Ayers Rock Medical Center in the resort town of Yulara. The flying doctors' jurisdiction is the state of South Australia and the southern part of the Northern Territories, but if necessary, flights also operate within the states of Western Australia, Queensland, Victoria and New South Wales. More than 2.3 million km in total. sq. covered by the medical network. Without this unique service, much of the country's remote corners would be uninhabitable.
