Photo and description

The memorial complex "Defenders of Yeisk" is one of the city's attractions, located on the Yeisk spit. The memorial complex was opened on May 8, 1995 thanks to the staff of the Yeisk Museum and the local department of culture. The basis of the complex was formed by the preserved long-term firing points (pillboxes).

In order to strengthen the defense of the Azov coast, by order of the People's Commissariat of the Navy, in July 1941, the formation of the Azov military flotilla began, which became part of the Black Sea Fleet. The first bases of the flotilla on the Sea of Azov were the cities of Rostov and Mariupol. But the enemy was advancing, and very quickly both cities were under the threat of capture by the enemy. As a result, military work began to be carried out to strengthen the Yeisk, Primorsko-Akhtarsky and Temryuk ports.

Since the fall of 1941, the line of defense of the Sea of Azov began to be created. An important role in the defense was played by the coastal artillery of the flotilla with the support of armored trains that arrived in Yeisk and Azov in January 1942. More than 3.5 thousand mines were installed on the ice. Directly near Yeisk, in the Taganrog Bay, there are five sites for anti-aircraft artillery. The concrete pads collapsed later due to a landslide.

Along the coast of the estuary, starting from the Yeisk spit, long-term firing points (bunkers) were lined up, providing shelling during an attack by enemy troops from the east. Two such pillboxes on the spit have survived since the 1930s.

The pillbox was museumified, after which an exposition was equipped in honor of the defense of the city of Yeisk by the Azov military flotilla in 1942 and its liberation in February 1943. The authors of the project of this exposition were I.A. and artist Podgorny G.G.

Three artillery pieces of the Great Patriotic War are installed at the memorial complex. The architectural idea ends with a concrete wall in the form of an unfolded banner with a through star. The author of this solution was the architect Kuznetsov A.V.
