The name in English is Museum of Ancient Art Side. Photo and descriptionThe ancient city of Side, located on a green picturesque peninsula in the Mediterranean Sea, is considered one of the main tourist centers of Turkey. The word `` Side '' from ancient Greek it translates as `` pomegranate '' - a symbol of fertility. It has long been known that Side is a real example of an open-air museum city and the largest archaeological zone in Turkey. To date, most of the very valuable finds discovered in the area of this city at different periods of time are in the City Museum, which is always ready to present these amazing exhibits to tourists. A large number of exhibits of the museum were found in 1947-1967 during the excavations of this ancient city under the leadership of Arif Mufid Mansel. Examining the halls of the Side Museum, one should not rush: after all, in each room there is a charm and mystery of a certain era. Reliefs, sarcophagi and Roman statues found during excavations on the territory of Side. Most of the statues, unfortunately, are devoid of heads, since Christians were opponents of idolatry. A unique part of the collection are children's sarcophagi with a picture of a dog peeping out of the door, personifying a heartbroken mother, butterflies and swallows - symbolic images of innocent children's souls ... A bronze statue of Artemis can also be seen here. With her right hand, the goddess takes an arrow from the quiver, and with her left hand she holds a bow. Her hair is gathered at the back of her head. Also featured is the head of Apollo, made of white marble. Hair parted in the middle of the forehead, combed back in wavy strands. The forehead of the statue is triangular, the nose is quite wide, but the mouth is slightly open. The back of the head is broken off and lost. In the first hall of the museum, you will find unique exhibits such as weapon bas-reliefs from the Hellenistic period, an altar from the Roman period and a sundial. In the second room, torsos from the Roman period are displayed. In the third room there are amphoras, statues, bas-reliefs, inscriptions from the Hellenistic period, and in the fourth - tombs, statues of Athena, Hermes, Hygia, Apollo, Nike, portraits and torsos. The remains of the amphitheater have survived to this day in Side for sixteen thousand spectators, a statue of Emperor Vespasian, the Temple of Fortune, agora, a fountain, Roman baths (which currently houses an archaeological museum), an aqueduct and a necropolis.
