Later, in order to avoid wars, the locals built fortifications around the city, protecting Side from the sea and land. Frequent earthquakes that took place in these places could not destroy the fortifications, and today from the land side you can see almost fully intact towers and a wall running along the city. Unfortunately, the fortress walls erected from the side of the sea have hardly survived in our time. The wall was about six kilometers long, and from the side of the sea the width of the walls was about three meters. Side walls dating from the 2nd century BC were originally built for defensive purposes. After numerous battles, the walls were often completed, therefore, today layers of different eras - Roman, Byzantine and Hellenistic - can be traced in them. To repel attacks, turrets and loopholes were attached to the walls. We also recommend reading Cinci Hani caravanserai in Turkey, Safranbolu resort Topic: Fortress walls in Turkey, Side resort. |
